Three decades of flavor and fun

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, among Vermont’s most famous companies, turns 30 this summer.

The company has left an indelible mark on Vermont and beyond in the three decades since its founding. It has grown from a small, quirky Burlington shop to a major international corporation and one of the largest providers of premium ice cream in the world. Its factory headquarters in Waterbury is a huge tourist draw.

The company will hold 30-year-old birthday celebrations in London (July 26-27) and Burlington (Oct. 11).

Waterbury’s 'chaos poet'
Tom Murphy

Waterbury Center resident Tom Murphy might feel at home in Vermont, but in Europe he feels like a star.

Murphy, 56, has been performing physical comedy — some call it slapstick, others call it variety comedy — for virtually all of his adult life.

Vermonters sweep top 8-Miler spots
Photo by Chris Hrenko. Kasie Enman of Huntington kicks toward the finish line on Weeks Hill Road in Sunday’s Stowe 8-Miler.

The Stowe 8-Miler — back after a one-year hiatus — was gratefully embraced by nearly 600 finishers on Sunday.

And, for the first time in five years, the top finishers were Vermonters.

Frederick Rountree, 30, of Williston won the race in 41 minutes, 48 seconds — a pace of 5:14 per mile. Less than a minute behind him were a pack of three: Eric Blake, 29, of New Britain, Conn. (42:12), Muller Bernie, 25, of Boston (42:17) and Chuck Terry, 26, of Albany, N.Y. (42:31).

Huntington’s Kasie Enman, 28, was the first female finisher in 46:38; she finished 16th overall a...
